The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This landmark event arrives after challenging years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and challenged its huge agribusiness.
An Update Shows An Absence of Drought
The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This development was driven by a period of above-normal rainfall that helped fill water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their typical levels.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a weather expert.
From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons
The journey here involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern
However, authorities caution that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” explained a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance during the coming seasons.
