Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
