Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
